Best Things to See in Gyeongju UNESCO City
In the south of the North Gyeongsang province, you’ll find the enchanting city of Gyeongju! Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond
If you want to feel like royalty, don’t miss out on seeing Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond! These were sites of the secondary palace of the crown prince, where they had fabulous banquets and gatherings. Although it is majestic during the day, the palace and pond are lit up during the evenings, creating an especially enchanting view!
Woljeonggyo Bridge
Reported to be the oldest bridge in Korea, Woljeonggyo Bridge is a can’t-miss sight to see in Gyeongju UNESCO City! The original bridge was built during the Silla dynasty, with traditional design. Although it was burned down during the Joseon dynasty, the Woljeonggyo Bridge has since been rebuilt to its full glory. Much like the Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, we recommend visiting during the day and the evening for two different views!
Cheomseongdae Observatory
This little observatory is one of the most captivating sights in Gyeongju UNESCO City, and it should not be missed! This little, cylindrical building is the oldest remaining observatory in all of Asia. Constructed during the Silla dynasty, this little building captures lots of symbolism. In fact, it was built with 365 granite stones to signify the number of days in a year. Don’t miss this unassuming, but important historical gem!
Daereungwon Tomb Complex
It’s hard to miss this impressive collection of ancient tombs within Gyeongju UNESCO City’s historic complex. This tomb complex boasts 23 burial mounds, which create an impressive form on the surrounding landscape. When visiting the complex, you can walk around the burial mounds and marvel at the views. It’s definitely worth a visit!
Gyeongju National Museum
While you’re in Gyeongju City, make sure you stop by the National Museum, so you can see some of Gyeongju UNESCO City’s relics on display! During the restoration of the site, thousands of historic relics were uncovered. Many of those relics are on display in the Anapji Exhibition Hall of Gyeongju’s National Museum today!
